Camp Hi Hill
What is Camp Hi Hill?
Camp Hi Hill is an outdoor school operated by the Long Beach Unified School District. The school is located on thirteen acres of government-leased land in the Angeles National Forest near Mt. Wilson, fifty-two miles from Long Beach. Every fifth grade student in LBUSD has the opportunity to attend Hi Hill and learn in our outdoor classrooms. The mission of Hi Hill Outdoor School is to provide an outdoor science based program emphasizing conservation, environmental awareness, and democratic social living skills in which students actively participate in a safe and healthful manner.
January 2008:
Camp Hi Hill Artist Chosen

Jose Loza, a young local mural artist has been chosen to do the art work to
improve the Camp Hi Hill Bird Blind. His work includes the mural done for the
Nature Center at the Colorado Lagoon. He will paint the new panels with images
of the birds most seen at the Camp, so that the students are going to be able to
learn to identify them. We hope his talent will inspire young birders for years
to come!
December 2007:
Funding Approved
Good news!! The Chapter quietly
reapplied for a grant for the
Camp Hi Hill Bird
Blind
project that was initially turned down
over a year ago. This time,
Audubon California approved the funding for this fun and exciting project. We
are going to commission a mural to replace the faded
bird pictures and the wooden blind in front of the
feeders. Long Beach School District Fifth Graders are going to be able
to see and learn about birds close up!
Also we are planning to do some special fundraising to supplement this project. We are going to initiate a fund to help replace the bench in front of the blind. Not only do we want to ensure that things look great, we want them to have the feeders and supplies needed to make it special. Promoting education about birds and their habitat is our mission, and we really want the community to get involved in helping the school too. This is a way to make nature education fun and perhaps inspire some new young birders. They are the future of this Chapter. If you are an art lover, send a check today, earmarked for the Camp Hi Hill Special Fund. So keep checking back for pictures that will show the progress and by Spring 2008 we anticipate the completion of the project. In meeting with staff, we learned the school’s 60th Anniversary is going to be celebrated then, and we would really love to be able to show off this project. Check here often for updates on this important project!
