Other Projects
In addition to the ones already listed, the Chapter has several other important projects.
Eyes on the Colony (EOC)
By John Fitch, NWR Chair
The Least Terns will be coming in the middle of next month (April), and
so will start our EOC for the 2008 season. After last year's debacle, we
need to be even more vigilant for predators.
Eyes on the Colony is a volunteer effort of our chapter that puts tern
watchers on site at the nesting colony 12 hours a day, 7 days a week
from mid April to the end of July. The mission is to keep notes on Least
Tern activities and to scare off any predators observed.
If you'd like to volunteer, or would like more information, call John
Fitch (# is on back of newsletter) or the refuge at 562-538-1024.
Bluebird Box Trail
Bluebird Box Project
A beginning trail of bluebird boxes was established in Areas II and III
of El Dorado Regional Park, Long Beach, in February 2000. You can help
by making boxes (we supply the blueprints), putting up new boxes,
monitoring the trail during breeding season (weekly, March through early
August), cleaning out boxes after the birds have fledged or by donating
money to pay for the boxes. To date, we have had over a 80% success
rate. We are currently in need of a new Bluebird Box Trail Coordinator.
